Jaranan art is a type of Kuda Lumping art that began to appear since the 10th century Hijri in Wengker or Ponorogo today. Precisely in 1041 or at the same time the Kahuripan kingdom was divided into 2, namely the eastern part of the Jenggala Kingdom with the capital city of Kahuripan and the western part of the Panjalu or Kediri kingdom with the capital Dhahapura.
History
In the story developed by jaranan artists in Kediri, King Airlangga has a daughter named Dewi Sangga Langit. She is a very beautiful kediri. At that time there were many who applied, so he held a contest. Dewi Songgo Langit’s applicants are all powerful. They both have high power and knowledge. Dewi Songgo Langit actually doesn’t want to get married and she wants to be just a recluse. Prabu Airlangga forced Dewi Songgo Langit to marry. Finally he wants to marry with one request. Whoever can make art that does not exist in Java, he will become her husband.
There are several people who want to apply for Dewi Songgo Langit. Among them were Klono Sewandono from Wengker, Toh Bagus the envoy of Singo Barong from Blitar, kalawraha, a duke from the south coast, and 4 soldiers from Blitar. The applicants together took part in a competition held by Dewi Songgo Langit. They departed from their respective places to Kediri to apply for Dewi Songgo Langit.
From some of the applicants, they met on the street and fought first before participating in the contest in Kediri. The fight was won by Klana Sewandono or Pujangganom. In that battle Pujangganom won and Singo Ludoyo lost. At the time of the defeat of Singo Ludoyo, it seems that Singo Ludoyo has an appointment with Pujangganom. Lion Ludoyo asked not to be killed. Pujangganom apparently agreed to the deal. However, Pujangganom has a condition that is Singo Barong must accompany his friend with Dewi Sangga Langit to Wengker.
The convoy of friends must be accompanied by jaran-jaran by passing underground accompanied by musical instruments made of bamboo and iron. In this day and age this iron becomes kenong. And the bamboo became a trumpet and a jaranan.
On the way to accompany his friend Dewi Songgo Langit with the Pujangganom, Singo Ludoyo thought that he had arrived at Wengker, but in fact he still arrived at Mount Liman. He was so angry at that time that he ransacked Mount Liman and now that place is Simoroto. Finally, before he reached the land of Wengker, he returned to Kediri. He came out of the Selomangklung cave. Now the name of the place is Selomngkleng.
Because Dewi Songgo Langit had been brought to Wengker by Pujangganom and did not want to become king in Kediri, then the power of Kahuripan was given to his two younger brothers, named Lembu Amiluhut and Lembu Amijaya. After Sangga Langit was brought by Pujangganom to the Wengker Bantar Angin area, Dewi Sangga Langit changed the name of the place to Ponorogo. Jaranan appeared in Kediri only to describe the bringing of the goddess Songgo of the sky from Kediri to Wengker Bantar Angin. When they were brought to Wengker, Dewi Sangga Langit and Klana Sewandana were paraded by Singo Barong. The procession is done by breaking through from the ground while dancing. The musical instruments played are made of bamboo and iron. In this day and age this iron becomes kenong.
To commemorate the contest held by Dewi Songgo Langit and her marriage to Klana Sewandono, the Reog Ponorogo art was created by the then Ponorogo king in Wengker, where in the Reog art there is the Jathilan dance (Kuda Lumping) which spreads to Kediri so that these two arts actually have roots. almost the same history. This jaranan art has been passed down from generation to generation until now.
